One way to work smarter is to set up review blogs that make money for you even while you sleep. One of my 2011 goals is to significantly increase my monthly Amazon earnings so that I can earn money even when I am not actively working on it. This will require a lot of up front work. But once it’s going strong then I can ease up a bit and still collect a NICE monthly income.
2010 was the first year that I’ve been an Associate for Amazon. I dismissed the idea for years hearing about how low their commissions were.
But in early 2010 when I was setting up my Adsense sites I put some links to Amazon on my pages and to my surprise I immediately got several sales.
I was pretty much hooked after that! It just seems too easy. People love to buy from Amazon and they usually buy more than the products you are promoting.
Unfortunately, my earnings have been all over the place and this is because I have been spreading myself thin working on too many projects at once. December earnings were a sad $87! But what can I really expect if I’m not being consistent in my efforts??
But NO more! I will put in the work so I can earn the dough! Especially, when I know there are people making a full time living on Amazon sales alone (see Chris Guthrie and the ladies over at Affiliate Blog Online).
The first step in this challenge (of course, join me if you like) is to assess what I have going on.
Over the past year, I’ve built well over 30 blogs in many different niches and not-so-quickly realized that this is not the path I wanted to take. Once I decided this was not the path I wanted to take, I sold over half of them and a couple I just let go. Now with roughly 8-10 (8 for sure, 2 are up in the air) I feel I can take each one step by step to earning much more.
First, I’m going to follow the advice at Affiliate Online Blog that says to assess your pages not blogs. They also say you only need a handful of pages to make a full time living with Amazon.
In fact they say that you only need ONE good review to make great money! That makes me feel much better since I am so scatterbrained sometimes! 🙂 Update: I won a copy of the Amazonian Profit Plan! So I’ll be using this strategy for the challenge.
So the overall plan will be to:
1. Assess what I have going on right now. Don’t build any more blogs or product reviews until I get what I already have working for me.
I’m going to pick 5 product reviews that I have already created (as long as they meet the criteria in the APP) to focus on and that’s it!!! I will sooo try anyway…
2. Tweak and rework pages.
3. Backlink like crazy until I reach #1 spot for my main keyword (then move on to the next page and do the same thing). Ideally it would be great to have each product review ranking for several keywords.
So, right now I’m in assessment mode. One thing I’m finding as I’m going through everything is that I created most of my Amazon blogs prior to the change Google made that updated the keyword tool. Sooo the keywords I am ranking for or targeting are not good keywords any more. They have really low volumes! 🙁 Now I have to go back and rework my pages with better keywords.
Okay, so what’s the Amazon Challenge?
To create $5K/mo by June 2011.
Typing that felt scary! But I did it anyway!
Lisa,
This is my plan as well. I have about 6 good domains that I want to work with and I hope I can make them profitable. That being said about domains, I have to keep in mind that Google ranks pages more so than domains. Pages, Pages, Pages.
Hi Ron,
YES pages, pages, pages!! 🙂
Great post Lisa.
I have also been experimenting with Amazon on niche WordPress installs. Like you I have not really applied myself enough, but also have seen the potential in using Amazon.
The commission rate and their short term cookies are discouraging. On the high ticket items like computers / laptops it is not bad though. Had 6 computer sales over the holidays, so my interest has been renewed:)
Looking for other like minded people like yourself to share some strategies. Will certainly be following your posts.
Happy New Year to you and all!
Terry
Hi Lisa, your plan is solid, and I’m sure you will reach your objective!
I never got a cent from Amazon, but only a lot of visits.
So your plan can become also my 2011 plan, also if I will be happy only with a few as 1K a month.
My main targets are always product creation and blog flipping, but it will be a great idea to add Amazon’s commissions to our global eanings.
About the keyword targeted domains, you are right. Google changed its way to show websites…
A good keyword research tool can help you a lot, one like Market Samurai saved me.
Please keep us updated on your progress!
Thanks and see you soon,
Alessandro Zamboni
Good luck with your challenge. I too, heard all of the negative things about Amazon – low commissions, 24 hour cookie – but it’s my main source of income right now. As long as you can get the traffic to Amazon, you can get sales. It is probably the most trusted website out there and people love buying from it.
I always sell items that have nothing to do with my site. Last month I earned over $2,600 with Amazon and this month I’m expecting it to be around $4,000. And hardly any of my traffic comes from Google.
Good luck getting to $5,000, I know it’s definitely possible.
Lisa
Thanks for your post and sharing your efforts to grow your Amazon affiliate income. I’m in a similar situation. I have 8 – 10 blogs that I am trying to rank. I have amazon links/pages on them and am seeing some decent earnings. I made a little less than what you made in Dec. I thought that was great considering my amazon affiliate links are not the focus of the blogs. Their just additional page that are hopefully providing value to my visitors and in turn generating income for me.
Wow 5K by June. That would be something. I’ll check out the course you mentioned. I too would like to grow my amazon affiliate income.
I’m using a WordPress plugin called WP Zon Builder (http://www.wpzonbuilder.com/). I’ve been pretty impressed by it.
I look forward to following your progress.
Jeff
I saw that you won the Amazonian Profit Plan – that’s great! It’s a really great guide. My goal is really focused a lot around Amazon, too. I am choosing three domains right now to build up, and then I’ll see what’s working and what isn’t. I am also going to try and get individual pages to rank and earn me money, though I would like to build my sites to authority status as well with a lot of info on them. I’ll just have to keep a close eye on what works and keep doing it.
Hi Terry,
Thanks for stopping by! Yes, some things about Amazon are a little discouraging, but on the flip side people love buying from Amazon. So I can only imagine if I can get a lot more traffic then I’ll be able to double my results each month. I’m hoping anyway!! 🙂
Hi Alessandro,
Yeah, I use Micro Niche Finder, but I heard Market Samurai is awesome. A lot of times I just use the Google Keyword Tool and look at the first page of Google for competition anyway. I can’t believe how much the volumes changed – but now I think the tool is much more accurate. Glad for that!
Ooohhh Greg, nice income you got going there! Do tell your secrets! It seems to me that if I increase my traffic then I’ll increase my earnings. You say that hardly any of your traffic comes from google…does it come from Bing and Yahoo? Or do you mean by another way? I do get a lot of traffic from those two sources as well.
I think one of the main challenges to getting to this income is BELIEF that you can do it. Sometimes I believe I can and other times I doubt!!
Hi Jeff!
That is great money for it not being the focus of your blogs! 5K seems almost impossible to me right now…but I really want to do this so bad I can taste it! 🙂 I am just sick of going round in circles with my affiliate income.
The wpzonbuilder looks similar to reviewazon. I haven’t used any of those plugins. I actually got my own plugin created that compares products and adds info like customer reviews and features using shortcodes. So I use this to add additional info at the bottom of the post (or whereever I want to put it). I’m testing it right now to see how well it works.
Thanks for stopping by!
Hi Ruth!
I know from reading your blog that we have a lot of common goals. I am all for the authority type sites too. I really hope that you reach your goals for 2011! Off to read your post…
Nice to see your post..I’ve got very similar goals for myself targeting amazon. 6000/mon by November 2011. Keep us updated on your progress. sometimes IM is like jogging. It’s nice to keep pace with a partner.
Lisa,
It is uncanny how my thinking parallels yours. I too have decided to ditch most of my under performing sites.
I picked my 3 best on the weekend. From there I selected the 3 best pages in terms of earnings Now I will tweek these to get maximum exposure and coverage of long tails then backlink the bejeesus out of them.
Time will tell but I feel in my water that this is the way to go.
I just wish I had your talent as a writer to write long reviews.
Craig
I’m really looking forward to watching your progress, Lisa. I’ve seen a nice boost in my Amazon earnings since September, when I first started focusing on Amazon sites myself. You are definitely right about people buying additional stuff – I really laugh at some of the random purchases I occasionally see show up in my account! I’m betting you are going to see a great fall next year, once the holiday sales start rolling in!
Hi Lisa,
First time here. I got here from Ruth’s blog. Good luck with your 2011 goals. I am a blogger but recently opened a PLR store. I also want to start a new site associated with Amazon sales as well. It looks like you may be one person I could learn from when it comes to making money online. $5K/month by June 2011. That is a formidable goal. Good luck with it!
Best,
Bob Bessette
congratulations on winning the profit plan!
I can’t wait to see what you accomplish! 🙂
Hi Craig,
Yeah, I feel better just focusing on the blogs and product review pages that I have. No need to complicate or anything right now. I will find out after like you say backlink the bejeesus out of them whether or not I need to add more content to reach my goal. But the fact is I just haven’t done the proper amount of backlinking. So we shall see what happens. 🙂
Congratulations on winning the Amazon ebook. I too am trying to reduce the amount of domains I have so that I can concentrate all my efforts on created authority websites.
I look forward to following your progress.
Have a great 2011.
Random for sure! Yes, I definitely want to set myself up sweet for next fall and beyond! We’ll see what consistent backlinking does for me. It’s worked well for you lol. 🙂
Hey Bob!
PLR and Amazon sales is a great way to go! 🙂 5K/mo by June is scary but I got to go after it! Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks Lauryn! 🙂
Thanks a lot! It’s great to meet others who have similar goals. Best wishes to you and your 2011 goals!
Way to set the bar, Lisa! I think you’ll love the book and the results – it’s been really an education for me to read, and Paula and Wanda’s $30k month was pretty inspiring to say the least.
You can definitely do it, here’s to your success!
Hi Lisa,
I seem to remember reading somewhere that most times you do not have to keep making new posts/pages. Simply find other keywords that visitors are using to find your page and go in and edit that page.
They said that one page can rank for dozens of keywords. I have trialled this the last 2 weeks and it seems to work. I simply added that “over 50’s” can do this and all of a sudden I rank top 3 for many over50 terms.
Talk soon
Yes, I’m totally inspired by how much they make coupled with HOW SIMPLE they do things!!
Here’s to your success in 2011 too!
Lisa,
I actually get most of my traffic now from Facebook. I created a fan page for my niche and whenever I update my blog I update my fan page and get almost instant traffic.
I pay for the fans thru FB advertising but once I have the fans they’re always fans (except for the very few that un-fan my page) but it’s not like paying for traffic to go to my site where I pay for it and they come to my site and I never see them again. Once i pay for them I can keep sending them info whenever I update my fan page.
I figure if a fan costs $.40 (only once) and I can make $.30 per month per fan, after the first month everything is profit. My actual numbers are actually much better than this though.
Greg
Trying to maintain the proper amount of focus is always my main problem. I am, however, planning on adding a few Amazon sites to my portfolio this year. I made a goal of NOT purchasing anything new this year but I keep hearing such good things about Paula and Wanda’s book…..
Lisa,
I hope you hit that 5K because it gives us all hope that maybe someday we can as well. Good luck!
Best,
Bob
Wow, I would really like to know more about this traffic method. I actually found on the warrior forum today a report by Adam C Miller – 500 everyday with facebook fanpages. Have you heard of that? Sounds similar. I’m just trying to figure out how to use it to promote amazon products. Plus I’m really dumb with facebook…but I need to learn more about how to use it. I’m learning more through my personal and business accounts which I’m not sure if I separated them correctly or not! Facebook is definitely where it’s at depending on the niche your in.
Yep focus is key and it always is my main problem too! I like the goals you have set. They are very doable! Just keep your focus. 🙂
See comments like this really motivate me to work hard to make it happen! 🙂
Hey Lisa:
Love your plan for 2011. Hope to go along with you.
Will you put me on your list so I can follow you down the path please?
I’m enthused because I just got my first Amazon deposit to my bank account.
Now I need to know how to really do it right.
Please keep me in the loop.
Thanks.
warren
Hi Lisa, you got a great plans and i hope u reach them by June 2011. I have 1 question, you mentioned about ranking pages, do u mean “wordpress pages”? Do they rank better than “wordpress posts” or is it something else?
Glad to have found your website. It’s an awesome goal and I hope you achieve it. That you encourage others to make stuff happen as well hopefully.
Hey There Warren,
I don’t have a list per se for the challenge. You can sign up to the RSS feed so that you’ll receive the next post. It’s exciting getting your first deposit so congrats on that!
Hi Marry,
Thanks, I hope so too! I meant posts or pages, some of my reviews are actually a page and not a post. No, neither rank better or worse than the other. I just meant that search engines rank individual pages/posts and not websites. So the thinking is that you go after ranking each page or post. Hope that clarifies!
Hi there! Thanks for stopping by and for the encouragement. You have a nice blog there! I really like what you said in the post – What are you going to DO today! It is sooooo easy to get distracted and do something else that do not bring you closer to your goal. This is something I struggle with and I am working to change!
I actually haven’t heard of that WSO but I’ve read a couple of them on Facebook but to be honest, the most important parts I figured out by myself.
Once I put a spreadsheet together and found out how much I was paying for new fans compared to how much I was making per fan per month it was obvious that I just had to keep adding fans which I’m still doing.
The great thing about this traffic is that once you get it, it stays at your site. Every time you post it goes out to hundreds or thousands of people. That’s instant traffic.
Also, the good thing that FB has over a list is that people expect you to update your FB fan page daily, sometimes a few times per day depending on the niche. If you do that with emails, you’ll lose all your subscribers and probably get shut down. I still do have a list though and I send an email newsletter out monthly. I’ve been able to increase the size of my list with the FB fan page also which is another huge benefit.
